Thunder in Paradise: Alfredo Angulo-James Kirkland, November 5 in Cancun

On a highly-anticipated November 5 HBO Boxing After Dark program, Mexico’s Alfredo Angulo (20-1, 17 KOs) will face Austin, Texas’ James Kirkland in a junior middleweight contest in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Although not as vital or as prestigious as it would have been two years ago, the bout is still a sure-fire war between two fighters who live and die with their prodigious offensive output.

Once regarded as the elite young junior middleweights in the sport, both Kirkland and Angulo have suffered through difficult times in recent years and hope to use this battle as the stepping stone to bigger and better things.

Kirkland had been inactive for two years due to a prison stint for parole violations. Shortly after returning to active duty, “The Mandigo Warrior” was stopped in the first round by light-hitting Nobuhiro Ishida in April of this year.

Angulo, following a tough decision loss to Kermit Cintron in May of 2009, won a few tune-ups before being forced into exile due to immigration issues. “El Perro” recently ended 13 months of inactivity with a quick first round KO of Joseph Gomez in his native Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.

On the undercard, middleweight/super middleweight prospect, Peter Quillin (25-0, 19 KOs) will take on Scotland’s Craig McEwan (19-1, 10 KOs) in a ten round contest.
