In their scheduled hearing today, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) issued two decisions that affect the livelihoods of fighters competing under their jurisdiction.
Victor Ortiz was issued a one fight conditional permit to fight in Nevada, pending further review of controversial statements the fighter made during a video interview.
In the interview, Ortiz told the reporter that he was intentionally trying to break Floyd Mayweather’s nose with a headbutt during his September bout with Mayweather. The admission brought the NSAC to summon Ortiz as a condition to issuing a license for the fighter’s scheduled bout against Andre Berto on February 11th at the MGM Grand.
A decision will be announced in ten days on whether punishment will be ordered for Ortiz. Up to 10% of the fighter’s $1 million purse could be withheld if the commission deems it appropriate.
In other news from Wednesday’s hearing, the license of former lightweight champion, Joel Casamayor has been revoked and a $10,000 fine issued for no-showing his mandatory hearing.
Casamayor tested positive for marijuana following his TKO 8 loss to Timothy Bradley on the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez undercard on November 12th and was scheduled to appear before the commission Wednesday.
