A lot of women’s boxing this weekend scattered around the globe, but the main attraction of the weekend was the WIBA world featherweight title bout between Amanda Serrano (17-1-1, 12 KOs) and Wanda Ozuna (8-5, 2 KOs) in the Dominican Republic on Saturday night. Serrano, a former IBF super featherweight title holder made short work of Ozuna, stopping her in the very first round. This was Ozuna’s first try at a world title and her first scheduled 10 round bout: the loss ended a three-fight win streak she had going in. This is Serrano’s second world title, and she’s also held the NABF featherweight belt. Her last defeat was against Frida Wallberg (L 10) last April in a bout contested for the WBC title. Since that defeat she has won three straight, this bout included, all being first round stoppages.
The NABF flyweight title was on the line in Jalisco, Mexico where undefeated champion Joselyn Ruiz (12-0, 4 KOs) defended against Momoko Kanda (4-6-2, 0 KO). Ruiz won the vacant title last October stopping then undefeated Yadiro Trejo in the second round, this was her first defense. She had little trouble with Konda, taking a unanimous 10 round decision to retain the title. Kanda now rides a three fight losing streak, having lost six of her last seven bouts.
WBC Youth super flyweight champion Darley Valente (8-0-2, 2 KOs) retained her belt with a 10 round draw against Mayela Perez (10-16-3, 7 KOs) in Quintana Roo, Mexico. This was the first defense for Valente, who won the vacant Youth belt with a third round stoppage of Liliana Ordonez this past August. This was the fourth title try for Perez, who had lost her prior attempts and is now 1-1-1 in her last three outings.
On the un-televised under card of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights in Uncasville, CT, New England welterweight champion Aleksandra Lopes (9-1, 1 KO) won and eight round decision over Adelita Irizarry (8-7, 2 KOs) in a non-title bout.
In two different cards in France, Amira Hamzaoui (8-0, 4 KOs) defeated Isabelle Leonardi (8-11-2, 3 KOs) over eight rounds and Lourdes Nunez won her pro debut with a four round decision over Cynthia Godbillon (1-7, 0 KO). Jessebelle Pagaduan (4-1, 3 KOs) won her fourth straight bout, spoiling the debut of Rose Cruz (0-1) in Manila. In Uruguay, Celeste Peralta (2-0, 1 KO) dealt Jennifer Faccio (3-5, 1 KO) her third straight loss, stopping her in the fifth round. Another even contest in Sinaloa, Selene Lopez (1-0-2, 0 KO) and Paloma Lopez (1-1-2, 0 KO) fought to a four-round draw for the second time: the two fought last September at the same venue, also resulting in a four-round draw. Evelyn Gutierrez (1-0, 0 KO) won her professional debut taking a six rounder over Irasema Rayas (0-3). In Oklahoma, two winless fighters stayed that way when Shana Chaney (0-3-1, 0 KO) and Sara Malay (0-0-1) fought to a four-round draw.
