Omar Nino Romero (29-3-2, 11 KO) regained the WBC title he lost after failing a drug test against Brian Viloria in 2006 with a unanimous decision victory over Rodel Mayol (26-5-2, 20 KO).
This was a rematch of the foul-filled three rounds in February this year, where Nino hit Mayol with a clear low blow and while referee Vic Drakulich stepped in, Nino threw a vicious left hook that knocked Mayol out cold. The rematch was just as dirty, with Mayol losing a point in the second and in the fifth for headbutts.
The fight was stopped several times for Nino to receive treatment for cuts above both his eyes following the butts he had taken over the course of the fight, but lasted the distance to win by scores of 117-109, 115-112 and 115-111.
