The Weekly Weigh-In

According to Richard Schaefer,  JMM v Katsidis is done all bar the signatures. Personally I can not wait for this matchup. Regular readers will know what I think of  the new Gatti, Katsidis. If this fight isn’t fight of the year I’ll eat my hat, though ill have to buy one first.

Talking of fights of the year, we finally have a leading candidate after last week’s amazing fight between newly crowned linear champion, Giovanni Segura, and the man he dethroned, Ivan Calderon. In an immense display of heart, pressure and unbreakable will, Segura finally ended Calderon’s ten year undefeated streak. Anyone out there who questions Calderon’s heart after the stoppage should really take a look at rounds four through six again.

It seems Margarito wants to challenge De La Hoya in the ring. He claims not to understand what Oscar has against him. Is Margarito really that stupid? Oscar has the same opinion all true fight fans have. Margarito should be banned for life. Even Pacquiao is now saying Margarito must have known about the plaster. Is Margarito  going to challenge me now?

James Toney now wants Randy Couture to step into a Boxing ring with him. How much lower can Toney go? Couture wasn’t the one shooting his mouth off, following around promoters for months, chasing them from state to state begging them for a chance to fight. Toney needs to take a leaf out of Couture’s book and take the defeat with class and quietly retire before someone retires him.

Looks like Hopkins V Pascal is done for December, I could use an early night just before Christmas. Looks like ill get my wish.

Now, lets move onto the fights of the week

We start the week in Nicaragua with WBA minimum weight champion Roman Gonzalez taking on Jesus Limones in a non title bout. Many are thinking that this is just a tune up for Gonzalez as he’s been out of action since January. Gonzalez should not really have much trouble with the inexperienced Limones, but we all know how tune ups can go.

On Friday, we move to Thailand and a  bout between  Oleydong Sithsamerchai and Pornsawan Porpramook for the WBC minimum weight title. Porpramook has lost 3 of his last 5, his last win was against a 1-6-1 opponent. They have already fought once with Sithsamerchai winning on points. I don’t expect there to be a different result this time around.

The latest Mexican Super Featherweight prospect, Nery Saguilian, should continue his unbeaten record on Saturday, especially as the guy he is fighting has never fought as a professional before. How can a commission allow this fight to take place? A guy who is 19-0 against a guy on his debut should be a criminal offense in my opinion. Boxing doesn’t need fights like this.

Omar Romero and Ronald Barerra meet for the WBC minimum weight title, the winner will be looking to unify against Roman Gonzalez in their next fight. Also on the same card, Jorge Solis takes on Francisco Cordero. Despite being unbeaten, Solis should easily handle Cordero.

In a division loaded with stars, somehow the IBF have Jan Zaveck as its welterweight champion. He defends against Rafal Jackiewicz, who has actually beaten him in their previous meeting. Now if I was Andre Berto, and I am not, mainly because I am white, a little overweight and Welsh, I would be targeting the winner of this for a unification fight. Although looking at the sanctioning bodies, if anyone is willing to sponsor me for 20k I am sure we can pay the IBF a “ranking fee” and set the fight up in no time at all.

We move to Germany and in particular to Felix Sturm as he takes on Giovanni Lorenzo in a WBA Middleweight title bout. It should be an interesting bout, Lorenzo lost to Sebastian Sylvester on a split decision a year ago. We all know what a split decision loss in Germany really means don’t we.

Finally we move to the UK for the first time in five weeks. Local Hero Ricky Burns takes on Roman Martinez for the WBO Super Featherweight title. Now I’m from the Uk but this fight is suicide for Burns. He cant punch but he can box a little, Martinez can Box very well and can punch up there with anyone in the world. Burns has already lost to Carl Johanneson and Alex Arthur. He is going to lose on Saturday as well.

That’s it for this week.
