When Golden Boy announced 1.4 million live viewers for their March 5th, Saul Alvarez-Matthew Hatton telecast, fans and media alike were impressed. The number would’ve placed the show on the high end of all HBO Boxing programming for the last 3+ years, only behind Miguel Cotto-Yuri Foreman at Yankee Stadium last year.
However, according to John Chavez at The Boxing Truth, Golden Boy appears to have exaggerated the number of live viewers for the show.
According to Chavez, who claims to have an inside source at Nielsen Media Research, the actual number of live viewers for the Alvarez-Hatton main event was 920,000 (with the undercard Adrien Broner-Daniel Ponce de Leon drawing 762,000 live viewers).
If this info is correct, it begs the question of whether Golden Boy is merely using some creative math with their 1.4 million figure, perhaps counting all replays of the telecast, or if they merely fabricated the rating in an attempt to accelerate Alvarez’s rise to the top.
