Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey– Sometimes it’s possible that two explosive and entertaining fighters matched up together could produce a less-than-thrilling contest. This was the case for Yuriorkis Gamboa’s (21-0, 16 KOs) eight round unanimous technical decision against Daniel Ponce de Leon (41-4, 34 KOs).
Cuban Olympic Gold Medalist, Gamboa, was clearly too quick for Ponce de Leon and beat him to the punch at every exchange with sharp, straight shots compared to the Mexican’s wide, thudding shots.
As expected by most, Ponce de Leon’s only chance was to catch a careless Gamboa, but Gamboa never gave his opponent the opportunity and won each round on The Boxing Tribune’s scorecard, creating a bit of an anti-climactic feeling along the way.
The fight came to an official end in the eighth round when an unintentional headbutt and a cut over Ponce de Leon’s left eye brought about the need for a technical decision. The judges’ scorecards were unanimous: 70-63, 69-64 and 70-63 all in favor of Gamboa.
On the non-televised undercard, Puerto Rican lightweight prospect, Luis Cruz (19-0, 15 KOs) walked right through veteran journeyman, Antonio Davis (28-7, 13 KOs), scoring a TKO in the sixth round of their scheduled 10.
