Marcos Maidana stays busy against Petr Petrov in Argentina

WBA “Regular” jr. welterweight champion Marcos “Chino” Maidana (30-2, 27 KOs) is set to defend in a stay-busy fight against Petr Petrov (29-2-2, 13 KOs) on Friday September 23, from Sociedad Alemana in Villa Ballester, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Maidana was scheduled to take on Robert Guerrero in August before a shoulder injury sustained by Guerrero forced the cancellation of the bout. After failing to find lucrative alternatives in potential rematches with Amir Khan or Erik Morales, Maidana decided to return to his native country to defend his title. Maidana has twice captured a WBA “Interim” title – once in his 2009 TKO victory over Victor Ortiz, and in his April majority decision win over Erik Morales. He was elevated to “Regular” Champion when Khan was elevated to “Super” Champion status in July.

This will mark Petrov’s second time fighting outside of his adopted home of Spain. Born in Russia, Petrov, a career lightweight (135 pounds) has fought club fighters and journeymen in Spain. His only previous fight outside of Spain took place in Germany in 2007, when he dropped an 8-round unanimous decision to Vitali Tajbert.
