Middleweight Andy Lee (27-1, 19 KOs) and welterweight Alexis Camacho (17-3, 16 KOs) will headline the return of Emanuel Steward’s Kronk Fight Night. The card will be held at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan on Saturday, March 10th. Doors open at 7:30PM CST with the first bout beginning an hour later.
Reportedly, Lee is tentatively scheduled to face Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. on June 2, 2012; a bout that will air on HBO. Most recently, Lee pulled out of a March 17th match in which he would have fought Peter Quillin (26-0) on the undercard of Sergio Martinez vs. Matthew Macklin. Perhaps Lee decided the risk wasn’t worth the reward, especially since it could have jeopardized a possible bout against Chavez, Jr.
Fighting out of Ireland, by way of Detroit, Lee is a southpaw who is ranked 14th in the world among middleweights and has only one loss on record. That loss came midway through his career in 2008 against Brian Vera who is now 19-6. Lee redeemed that TKO loss with a UD win over Vera in his last outing.
Before Vera, Lee scored wins over Craig McEwan and Alex Bunema. Against McEwan, who was 19-0 at the time, CompuBox shows that Lee threw and landed much fewer punches than his opponent, but the fact that he sent McEwan to the canvas in round nine and ten shows that he threw the punches that mattered. Lee scored a TKO 10 victory. Against Bunema, Lee was the favorite and scored a ten-round unanimous decision win.
Although Lee is being criticized for taking this bout, particularly due to the fact that Camacho has fought most of his career two weight classes below middleweight, it can be noted that in his entire professional career Lee has only fought opponents with winning records.
Camacho fights out of Mexico, by way of Austin, Texas, is coming off a two-year absence, and has gone 1-3 since 2008. He began 2008 with a loss to Terrence Cauthen by decision, and he followed that bout with a TKO win over Edvan Dos Santos Barros. In 2009, he lost to ranked junior middleweight Carlos Molina by decision, and in 2010, he was knocked out by Shamone Alvarez. This upcoming bout will be his first since that knockout.
The Kronk Fight Night card will feature a slew of Kronk Gym’s professional fighters including Tony Harrison, LeAndre White, Jacob Bonas, Ernie Garza and Wade Tolle, Jr. Information regarding tickets and live streaming can be found at www.kronkfightnight.com.
