Vera Gets Some Texas Home Cookin’ in Win Over Mora, The Rest of Saturday’s Action

Brian Vera (21-6, 12 KOs) took a mysteriously wide majority decision victory over Sergio Mora (23-3-2, 7 KOs) in a rematch of their 2011 Friday Night Fights affair, and Antonio Escalante scored a stunning KO victory over Leonilo Miranda on the undercard.

Tonight’s fight was just as close as the first fight between Vera and Mora (even though it appears two judges had their cards filled out before the opening bell), with Vera starting out fast landing his left hook in the first round. Mora came back to start landing his right hand in between slippery movement that kept Vera off balance in the second. The third round saw Mora choose to fight with his back on the ropes, slipping punches and landing in return and Vera banged away at his shoulders and back.

After four rounds, The Boxing Tribune had Mora leading in the fight. Over the next few rounds, Vera sharpened up his attack enough so that he wasn’t walking straight in, open to counters.

Throughout rounds 7 through 10, Mora’s offensive output dipped as he focused mostly on his movement and slipping punches while shooting out timely counters. Vera had a big eleventh round, as his left hook landed several times throughout the round. The twelfth round was edged to Vera, whose smart aggression again was the standout in the round.

Judge Wilfredo Esperon scored the fight a draw, 114-114. Judge Ruben Carrion turned in a horrendous scorecard of 118-110 in favor of Vera, and Rafael Ramos turned in a scorecard that read 117-111 in favor of Vera, the Texas native. The Boxing Tribune scored the fight a draw, 114-114.

A close win for either fighter would have been easy to explain, but the scorecards of Carrion and Ramos were ridiculous and placed their names below Gale Van Hoy on the list of awful Texas judges.

On the undercard, Texas featherweight Antonio Escalante needed only two rounds to put Leonilo Miranda away. A counter right hook dropped Miranda at the midway point of the second round, and that was all she wrote.
