Amir Khan made a lot of crazy statements last year and failed to back up any of them. He even said at one point that he wanted to make the switch from boxing to MMA so he could fight Conor McGregor. This year he is at it again and has called out boxing superstar Miguel Cotto. He wants the Puerto Rican to move down in weight to fight him at 147lbs but this is unlikely to happen as Khan does not have the pay-per-view numbers to make demands like this.
At 36 years of age, Cotto is not the force he once was but should still have enough power to take care of Khan. Last May Khan suffered a brutal KO by Saul Canelo Alvarez and it has greatly damaged his reputation as one of the best. If the two do agree to fight Cotto will surely fancy his chances after seeing Amir out cold.
Both boxers have fought Canelo and the fights were available as pay-per-view. Cotto managed to get 900,00 PPV which Khan only managed 600,000 which is good but nowhere near the level of the Puerto Rican. It is why Khan’s demands are ridiculous as he is not the main money man, therefore can not make the demands he is looking for.
Another question handing over Khan’s head is will boxing fans pay to see him fight again after being so brutally knocked out in his last fight against Canelo.Since suffering that devastating loss he has not had a fight since so it is impossible to say how badly that brutal KO has damaged him. Normally when a boxer suffers such a bad loss they fight lesser opponents to rebuild their reputation but Khan does not want to take this route and is insisting on a super fight.
Khan has the chance of two other possible super fights which make more sense than him fighting Cotto. Kell Brook who is the IBF champion at welterweight would be a great match up for the British boxer. They tried to negotiate a contract to fight last year but instead both fought bigger men and lost. Another possibility is him facing the winner between Keith Thurman Vs. Danny Garcia. Either fight would be a great opportunity for Khan to make lots of money and if he won it would help his chances of fighting Cotto.
Khan made a huge error in judgment by moving up in weight to face Canelo and if he wants to fight Cotto he may have to box at a catch-weight or even fight at 154lbs. It remains to be seen if Khan will take such a gamble again after been completely flattened when he moved up last time.
Cotto is due to fight Canelo in a rematch in December so the chances are that the fight will not happen with Khan. Boxing Betting Offers have the Canelo as the big favorite to win the fight and it is no surprise given his form. Cotto will not want to take the risk of losing to Khan before he fights Canelo as that will make a lot more money than fighting the British number one welterweight.
